The Way I See It

The Importance of Teamwork

I came across this little fable the other day, and I thought you might enjoy it.

One day, the Mayor of a small town decided to take a walk through their local park. He ran into a young boy who was flying the biggest and most beautiful kite he had ever seen. It soared high and gently across the sky, drawing attention from miles away.

The Mayor was so impressed that he decided to award a “key to the city” to the one responsible for such a beautiful thing. “Who is responsible for flying this kite?” the Mayor asked.

“I am,” said the little boy holding the big, beautiful kite. “I made this huge kite myself, and I painted all of the colorful pictures on it, and I fly it!”

Just then, the wind interrupted and said, “I am. It is my breeze that enables the kite to fly so big and beautiful. Without wind, the kite will not fly at all.”

And then the kite’s tail chimed in, “I make the kite sail and give it stability against the wind’s blowing gusts. Without me, the kite would spin out of control, and not even the boy could save it from crashing to the earth. I fly the kite!”

The Mayor thought about it and decided they are all responsible for flying the kite. After all, without teamwork, none of them would be successful!

Here’s the way I see it: Great things are accomplished with less me, and more we. Our team would love to help your sales soar with professional printing. Give us a call today to see how we can become a great team!

Idea of the Week
Master the Light With Custom White Balance
WHITER WHITES WITH ONE BUTTON

Not so long ago, color photographs were developed and printed in a darkroom. Colors were adjusted using chemicals, graduated color filters, and hundreds of dollars worth of equipment. The process of developing and printing photographs was long and grueling. Fortunately, today, things are different. Film photography has become a fine art, and digital photography has taken the helm because of its quick and efficient turnaround.

In the digital world, images can be edited, re-edited, and manipulated before they go to print. Instead of the enlargers and chemical baths found in traditional darkrooms, we now have the technology that gives us the post-processing power to tweak and change photographs to enhance them, sort of like a digital darkroom.

Adobe Lightroom is an inexpensive post-processing program used by amateur and professional photographers across the globe to edit and refine images. It includes many great features, one of which is a powerful White Balance tool that allows you to make color-tint adjustments that will help normalize the color tones you just couldn't land in-camera.

What Is White Balance And Why Does It Matter?

White Balance, which is measured in Kelvins, represents the temperature of light (cool or warm) recorded by your camera. Kelvins range from 1,500K (very warm) to 15,000K (very cool). It's important to stay aware of your White Balance setting as it could save you hours of editing time later. Most cameras today have pre-programmed presets such as Tungsten, Shade, Flash, Florescent, and Cloudy that all record temperature differently and help you capture colors as accurately as possible.

How Can I Make White Balance Changes In Lightroom?

When things aren't exactly what you're looking for, and you need to make adjustments, there are three ways you can adjust White Balance in Lightroom:

1) Eyedropper tool

Select the eyedropper tool from the Basics Panel and find an area in your image with light gray or neutral tones. Click that spot with the eyedropper tool and let Lightroom calculate the White Balance for you.

2) White Balance presets (RAW images only)

If your image is in RAW format, you'll have a list of White Balance presets available to you through the Basics Panel. Using the White Balance drop down menu, select an option that best describes the lighting conditions you shot in.

3) White Balance temperature and tint sliders

The temperature and tint sliders are an advanced setting that allows you to manually adjust how warm or cool an image is, in addition to adjusting the tint between green and magenta. This setting is the most powerful option of the three.

Go ahead and test the waters, and don't worry if you've made a mistake with your settings. Lightroom is a non-destructive editing program, so you can always get back to square one if you've made changes that just don't work well. Simply use the Reset button to remove all adjustments and return your settings to what they were when the image was captured, and you can start again.

Increase Your Social Accessibility
MAKE YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA CHANNELS EASIER TO USE

Social media has dramatically changed the way many organizations connect and interact with their audience. However, many social media platforms aren’t accessible and make it difficult to communicate to those who are blind, visually impaired, deaf, or hearing-impaired.

Here are a few ways to make your social media channels easier to use:

  • Write hashtags in camelCase, which makes compound words more readable. For example, look at the difference between #PUPPYLOVEADOPTIONDAY versus #PuppyLoveAdoptionDay

  • Include open or closed captioning on your social media videos. Open or closed captioning will not only make your social media more accessible, but it can increase your views because it allows people to watch videos without headphones and not worry about the sound bothering the people next to them.

  • Include image descriptions, which enable a screen-reader to describe what’s going on in the image so that blind users can have a full understanding of your social media posts.

  • Use multiple social media channels and provide a variety of content to increase engagement and boost interest with your audience. Instead of posting single photos with text, consider mixing up content with a slideshow with descriptions, live videos with captioning, or searchable hashtags to boost interest.

  • Text should have a good contrast ratio against its background to increase readability and use only sans-serif fonts, which are easier to read.

  • When including URLs, use link text that is short and easy to understand.

  • Use emojis sparingly. Remember that screen readers automatically read a description of emojis out loud, so a message with five cake emojis would be read as “cake cake cake cake cake.”

Perfect Bound Books
PERFECT BINDING IS A LOW-COST, YET PROFESSIONAL CHOICE

While there are many binding options to choose from, perfect binding is a low-cost, yet professional choice for product catalogs, reports, sales magazines, manuals, and much more, ranging from 28 pages up to two inches thick. A perfect bound booklet typically features a cardstock cover with text weight pages within. The pages are attached along the binding edge with strong glue.

Here are a few things to consider when creating a perfect-bound book:

  • With perfect binding, one sheet of paper equals two pages. When you look at a closed book, the cover is page one. Open the cover, and you will be looking at page two (left) and page three (right). Make sure to count every page, including the cover, the back cover, and the inside pages (including blank pages) for your total page count.

  • Don’t lose your text and images in the gutter. Depending on how many pages are in the booklet, the gutter can take up between 1/4” – 3/8” of each page.

  • Take extra care with two-page spreads. For example, if you choose an image or chart that will cover two pages, the gutter will obscure at least a quarter-inch off each side, which can drastically affect the appearance.

  • Depending on the book’s thickness, you may also use the book’s spine to promote content, such as an author, book title, or creative design. The exact thickness of your book will depend on the paper weight and the number of pages you choose. Our printing professionals can help you determine the exact width of the book’s spine.

If you’d like help creating a perfect bound book that looks perfect every time, our team of print professionals would love to help! Give us a call or stop by today.

Remove Third-Party Access on Social
STOP THIRD-PARTY APPS FROM ACCESSING YOUR PRIVATE DATA

When signing up for something online, it may be tempting to click “Sign in with Facebook” rather than fill out a form. However, when you choose this option, you are giving third-party apps access to your account data, such as your profile information, status, location, contacts, and shared content.

If you have ever used your social media or Google accounts to sign into a website or online service, here are easy instructions on how to stop third-party apps from accessing your private data:

  • Facebook: Go to Settings > Apps & Websites. To revoke access, click the X to remove.

  • Gmail or Google: Go to My Account > Sign-in & Security > Connected Apps & Sites > Manage Apps. Click on apps you want to remove and click the Remove button.

  • Twitter: Go to Settings > Apps. Click the Revoke Access button on the apps you want to disconnect.

  • Instagram: Go to Settings > Authorized Applications. Click the Revoke Access button to disconnect the apps.

  • Pinterest: Go to Settings > Apps. Click Revoke Access to remove them.

We know the importance of keeping private data confidential. When you work with our print shop, we promise that if you need copies or reproductions of confidential documents, your sensitive files will be in secure hands.
